HAL is Polyson’s research and development department.

Conceived as a space for creative and technological exploration in service of post-production crafts, HAL designs digital tools and resources for sound and image professionals. The technologies developed by HAL stem directly from studio practice and the needs encountered by post-production teams.

By developing its own in-house solutions, Polyson extends its field expertise and actively contributes to the evolution of the tools and workflows used in the creation of audiovisual works.

HAL is now structured around two entities: HAL Audio, dedicated to sound technologies, and HAL Picture, focused on image processing tools.

HAL Audio 1

HAL Audio

HAL Audio is the first initiative to emerge from the HAL lab, led by Cyril Holtz.

For several years, the team has been developing tools and resources for sound professionals: sound editors, sound designers, mixers, and composers for picture.

The brand notably offers a range of plug-ins dedicated to sound post-production, such as Move It, Boom It, and Cut It, designed to address specific needs in editing and mixing workflows.

In 2024, the Boom It plug-in received the César Technical Innovation Award, recognizing its contribution to sound post-production practices.

HAL Audio also develops professional sound libraries used by sound designers and post-production teams.

In February 2026, HAL Audio launched Morphosis, a sound morphing tool that enables one sound to be shaped using the characteristics of another.

Designed for sound creation and audio post-production, Morphosis opens up new possibilities for building sonic worlds and for music creation.

Beyond tool development, HAL Audio can also collaborate directly with productions to develop or implement certain of these technologies through tailored services.

HAL Picture

Officially launched in November 2025 by Paul Morin (DOP), Martin Roux (DOP), and Olivier Patron (DIT), HAL Picture is the HAL lab entity dedicated to image technologies, designed for directors of photography, colorists, and image post-production teams.

HAL Picture

HAL Picture introduced Diachromie and Diaphanie, a suite of parametric plug-ins dedicated to look development. These tools are built on a smart color science approach, enabling users to explore and craft the visual identities of films with precision and flexibility.

Rather than imposing predefined looks, Diachromie and Diaphanie give cinematographers and colorists direct control over the parameters that shape color and texture. An approach designed to restore creative ownership to filmmakers and make look development a true space for creation.

Cesar Technique 2026

The Diachromie / Diaphanie suite received the César Technical Innovation Award in 2026, recognizing its contribution to the evolution of visual creation and look development tools.

Through HAL Picture, Polyson continues its ambition to explore new ways of working with image and to expand the tools available to colorists and cinematographers.
